President: Salaries can only be increased by reducing number of civil servants

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the number of civil servants must be reduced if they are to be given a pay hike.

The President made this remark while speaking at a ceremony at Hotel Jen on Monday, 21 December 2015, to launch the Civil Service Strategic Action Plan 2016-2020.

He urged Civil Service Commission to conduct a Performance Audit and Related Human Resource Audit, and announced plans to establish a Central Licence Authority next year.

The President said that the lack of a comprehensive human resource audit has resulted in an overstaffed civil service sector.

“I was informed in a reply letter from the Civil Service Commission, as part of the efforts to increase salaries and allowances of civil servants, that the civil service is overstaffed. We have to make the civil service the employees centre,” President Yameen said.
