No salaries for Councillors for days they are absent from work: LGA

Local Government Authority (LGA) has notified all Councils to enforce the revised regulation on the operation of Councils, which states that salaries will not be given to Councillors for days they do not report to work.

LGA member Ahmed Faisal said today that Councillors are employed full time, so they have to be treated in the same manner as all other full time employees.

He said that the regulation has been revised to include policies for salary payments, vacation periods, and sick allowances. A circular has been sent to notify all Councils to enforce the new regulation from today onwards.

“Even fishermen only catch fish if they go fishing. So it does not make sense that Councillors receive salaries if they don’t fulfill their responsibilities. This has been added to the regulation and all Councils have been informed,” Faisal said.

The Councils have also been informed today that Council Presidents and Vice President cannot be removed from their posts through emergency meetings.

Referring to the issue of some Councils obstructing the delivery religious speeches, Faisal said that the Authority has received several such complaints, and that the Councils had been advised to refrain from obstructing religious speeches.
