Dunya to depart on official visit to India tomorrow

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon will depart on a two-day official to India on Saturday, Indian paper Business Standard has reported.

During her visit, Dunya will hold talks with her Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj regarding the current political situation in the Maldives.

This includes the recent declaration by President Abdulla Yameen of 30-day state of emergency, which was lifted early following requests from Sri Lanka, US, and the Commonwealth.

Business Standard reported Maldivian High Commissioner in India Ahmed Mohamed saying, “The Foreign Minister's visit, soon after the Joint Commission Meeting in Malé last month, to meet her counterpart Swaraj is a clear signal of the intensity of the vibrant and robust relationship between Maldives and India.”

Swaraj visited Maldives for the Joint Commission Meeting on 11 October 2015.

During the visit, she paid a courtesy call on President Yameen, and met with Indians living in Maldives as well as senior officials of the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
