The European Union has expressed concern over the declaration of State of Emergency in the Maldives, and called for the immediate restoration of all fundamental rights and freedoms.
The statement, dated 5 November 2015, reads, “The decision to declare a State of Emergency and suspend fundamental freedoms enshrined in the constitution of the Maldives is the latest in a series of worrying developments in the country.
“It is essential that all constitutional fundamental rights and freedoms are immediately restored and that due process of law is respected. A genuine dialogue with all political parties on the future of the country needs to be established.
“The EU expects all parties to act responsibly and to exercise restraint.”
In addition to the EU, the Commonwealth and the United States have also called to terminate the State of Emergency.
State of Emergency was declared on 4 November 2015 for 30 days by Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen.
