Article 100 (e) of the Constitution states that a resolution to remove the President or Vice President from office shall only be passed if it receives a two-thirds majority of the parliament.
The Constitution says that a committee of the Parliament can be charged with looking in to a resolution to impeach the President or the Vice President.
The Vice President has to be notified 14 days before the debate on the impeachment can begin. And the Vice President has the right to respond verbally or in writing. The constitution also allows the use of a lawyer to answer on his behalf.
In the President’s address to the nation on Sunday, the President pointed blame towards the Vice President.
Two-thirds of the parliament required to pass the resolution is the vote of 57 MPs out of 85.
After the explosion on board the Presidential Launch on 28 September, the President established a National Inquiry Commission with the home Minister Umar Naseer as the Co-Chair of the Commission. Aside from the Home Minister, there are three MNDF officers and three Police officers on the Commission.
Although the First Lady sustained serious injuries in the explosion, the President was unharmed. A Presidential aide and a bodyguard was also injured in the incident.
