Construction work has started on establishing a sewage system in R. Alifushi.
Construction work was launched by State Environment Minister Abdul Matheen in a ceremony held at the island on Tuesday.
Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) – who are in charge of the project – said that pipes stretching to 16 kilometers would be buried as part of the work.
The company also said that an outlet system would be established with four sewerage pump stations.
They also expressed hope that the project would be completed within October, 2016.
Speaking during the launching ceremony, MWSC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed said that establishing sewage systems in islands would also result in creation of more job opportunities for locals. And that as such, Alifushi sewage system would also result in more job opportunities for the people of the island.
He added that the establishment of a sewage system would curb spread of disease on the island, leading to healthier people.
