More than Rf370m owed to the State

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA)’s financial statements have revealed that up till last Monday, Rf374.9m is owed by various groups to the state.

The largest sum is owed by the tourism sector, which amounts to $21m (about Rf332m) in rent and resort lease payments. In addition, Rf2.3m is owed as tourism tax and fine for failure to meet the deadline to pay tourism tax.

MIRA has filed 17 cases to court in relation to these payments.

More than Rf37.3m is owed by agriculture and fisheries sectors, and Rf2.1m is owed by contracts made by groups related to Finance Ministry. The total owed by these sectors is Rf374.9m, and MIRA has filed 12 cases to court in this regard.

Out of this, dollar amounts of $21.6m (Rf333.2m) and Rufiya amounts of Rf41.7m should be received by the government. MIRA collected Rf21m from arrears in the first quarter of this year, and Rf17m from audits.

MIRA has filed 29 cases to Civil Court in relation to the outstanding payments. Also, more than 200 businesses have failed to pay or file GST.
