Police have said that a decision on Usfasgandu will be made after further investigation.
A statement issued by Criminal Court regarding Police request to issue an order to allow them to dismantle Usfasgandu, said that investigation of the documents submitted by the Police has resulted in no indication that the case of Usfasgandu is within the purview of the Criminal Court, thus the Court cannot issue the requested order.
A Police media official said today that the Police are looking into certain issues following this statement by Criminal Court, and that a decision on Usfasgandu will be made soon.
“A decision can be made today, or tomorrow. We are still looking into it,” he said.
The cabinet indicated that City Council had violated the agreement with the government, and thus made the decision to hand over Usfasgandu from City Council to Housing Ministry. The Attorney General also had advised that the area can be taken over by the government.
City Council has said that handing over Usfasgandu to MDP for political activities is not a violation of the agreement, and that the Council will soon commence development of the area.
MDP first put up camps at Lonuziyaaraiy kolhu following the fall of President Nasheed’s government on 7 February. The Police raided and dismantled the camps on 19 March. Usfasgandu is leased to MDP for political activities until the end of June 2012.
