To initiate the World Tourism Day festivities, “Keep Calm and Ride a Bike” cycling event was held in Malé City today.
A large number of people took part in the cycling event which was part of the “The Tourism Adaptation Project” (TAP) by the Tourism Ministry and the UNDP.
The cycling event began at the Social Center area and ended at Raalhugandu (Surf Point). After the cycling event, a bicycle stunts display was held at Raalhugandu.
UNDP says that the purpose of the cycling event was to show that the environment and tourism are both entwined with each other.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, Environment Minister, Thoariq Ibrahim said that bicycle is the most environmentally friendly method of transportation.
While bicycles reduce the impact on the environment, Minister Thoariq said that there isn’t any parking space for bicycles.
He said that the government has decided to established dedicated parking zones for bicycles which is something a lot of the people are in need of.
“A lot of people are saying that it is difficult that there aren’t any dedicated parking zones. We see special areas being made to park motorcycles and bicycles. So the government is thinking about making special parking zones for bicycles. Those zones would be seen in the near future.” Minister Thoariq said.
