The EIA report has shown that there would be environmental impacts leading to polluted water from inadequate water flow at the new Artificial Beach being constructed in Maafannu.
The EPA report issued yesterday based on research of the environment in the new Artificial Beach area says that the project would lead to negative environmental impacts.
The report said that impurities were found in the water sample they got from the area for the EIA.
Negative Impacts on the environment:
- Change to the traffic in the area
- Increase of waste created during and after the construction phase
- The construction noise affecting the nearby schools and hospital
- Inadequate water flow in the area leading to pollution
- Damage to the reef
- Safety issues concerning the people in and around the area

While a lot of effort is being put to resolve the environmental issue of the Maafannu Artificial Beach Project, the EIA report requests to do a number of things.
The report requests that the removal of the seawall be done in low tide on clear weather, remove the seawall after the outer wall has been completed, and dispose of the waste created on site immediately by taking it to Thilafushi.
The report also calls to put on life guards around the clock and specify a designated area to swim for children.

First things to be done when opening for the public:
- Life guards on duty
- Designated swimming area for children
- Cleaning the beach at least once a day
- Bring changes to the outer wall design if the water flow is inadequate
- Ensure that the water collected on the streets during rain does not go into that area
The report issued to minimize environmental impacts says that if the instructions on the report are followed, the project would be a fine example for others. And that the people of the incredibly crowded Malé would receive another area in the city to relax.
