The family of Azfa Zuhair, 24, who died on Sunday following an accident, has expressed sadness over the efforts by some groups to politicise her death.
Azfa was hit by a street post used for 50th Independence Day decorations on Saturday, and died as a result of the injuries the following day.
In a statement issued today, Azfa’s family said that President Abdulla Yameen contacted the family by phone following the accident, and that the government provided assistance in taking her abroad for treatment.
The family thanked Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for their efforts to save Azfa’s life.
They have also urged to expedite the investigation, and requested President Yameen to take action against anyone whose negligence may have caused this accident.
Azfa died after being hit by a street post used for decorative lights near the Public Works building on Izzuddin Magu, on Saturday night.
Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure said that the post fell after it was hit by a speeding container truck.
Police say the accident was not the fault of the truck driver, and the investigation is ongoing.
Azfa was hit by the post while passing by on the backseat of a motorcycle.
She lost consciousness and passed away in the hospital at 2:28 p.m. on Sunday, as a result of injuries to the head and spine.
Azfa was a medical student in a university in Russia and was in Malé for holidays.
