PPM Council meeting cancelled since President Maumoon cannot attend

Since the former President and the President of PPM, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom cannot attend, the PPM Council meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.

The PPM Council meeting was called to discuss the amendment at the Parliament floor that could force President Maumoon to lose the presidency of the party.

The amendment to the Law of Political Parties presented by the opposition MDP’s the MP for the Mid-Henveiru constituency, Ali Azim says that since the age of the highest leader of the state, i.e. the President cannot exceed 65 years, the same should be applied to the leaders of political parties.

The Deputy Secretary General of PPM, Abdulla Aleem told Sun Media that the Council meeting for tonight was cancelled because President Maumoon is out of the city. And due to bad weather, he couldn’t make it back.

The amendment by MP Azim says that from the day if the bill’s ratification, if anyone above 65 years of age is leading any political party, they should resign from the position.

If the amendment passes as such, President Maumoon would lose his position as the President of PPM. President Maumoon is currently 77 years old.

In a recent amendment to the Constitution, the age limit for the highest in the state has been declared as 65. MP Azim said that he proposed such an amendment to bring the Law of Political Party close to the change made to the Constitution.
