Hassan Latheef responds to some of the questions from the Police promising upon God

Lawyer Hassan Latheef, who is part of the former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Defense team, has responded to some of the questions in the Police investigation under oath with his hand upon the holy Quran.

Speaking to the media after leaving the Police station following a slip last night from the Police summoning him, Hassan Latheef said that he was summoned regarding a case of forgery using the letter head and stamp of the Maldives Correctional Service that was issued to the former President that says that he was put under house arrest to serve out the rest of his 13-year sentence.

Latheef said that the forged letter with the stamp and letter head of the Correctional Service was delivered at M. Yaagoothuge on 19 July by a man in a tie.

He said that he has no idea who the man was.

Hassan Latheef said that President Nasheed called him on the phone when a man came to deliver the letter asking him if he could come over and so he went there.

“There was a man in a tie when I went there. With the letter head of the Correctional Service and it was signed on the stamp. And the man had a letter with similar phrasing to the two letters from the Correctional Service on 21 June 2015 and 23 June 2015. Two originals, he gave one original and took the other one with him. This is what I told with my hand on the Quran, swearing upon the name of God.” Hassan Latheef said.

President Nasheed’s family has handed the video footage of the man with the alleged letter from the Correctional Service wearing a tie entering the residence.

Hassan Latheef said that the Police have not pressed any charges against the lawyers on President Nasheed’s defense team.

Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee, who is temporarily in charge of the Home Ministry, said that the Correctional Service did not give a letter to him that says that President Nasheed was moved to house arrest permanently.

Dr. Shainee said that no orders came on behalf of President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom to the Home Ministry or the Correctional Services about moving President Nasheed to house arrest on a permanent basis.
