Sheikh Imran changed to house arrest

Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdhulla who has been accused by state of terrorism and imprisoned was changed to house arrest.

Criminal Court on Wednesday morning issued the order that Sheikh Imran be kept under house arrest until the end of trial.

He was changed to house arrest after he was arrested at June 2 and held 64 days in police custody.

Criminal Court on June 20 issued the order that Sheikh Imran be kept under police custody until end of trial, with the presiding judge citing the nature of the case, what had taken place, and the contents of police intelligence report.

State has accused Sheikh Imran of firing up the protesters participating in the “Against Oppression” protest held on May, 2015; which led to protesters to break free of the barricades set by police and injure police and damage private property.

However, state has not provided details what exactly Imran had said that had riled up the protestors.

Imran was charged in reference to 2 (a), under 6 (b) of Anti-Terrorism Act.

Law defines attempting to kill anyone or causing physical harm to anyone with the intention of killing someone - with the intention of frightening someone or a group of people or spreading fear as terrorism.

Anyone proven to have an act of terrorism that does not result in physical harm will be served with a 10 – 15 year jail sentence.
