Commonwealth Secretary-General: Hope Maldives remains a member of Commonwealth

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma has said that he hoped that the Maldives “would remain a valued and active member of the Commonwealth family”.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, that Sharma made this remark during a meeting with Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed on 28 July 2015.

The meeting took place at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

During the meeting, the Foreign Secretary briefed the Secretary-General on the recent political developments in the Maldives, including the Prosecutor General’s decision to appeal former President Nasheed’s conviction.

Sharma’s remark regarding Maldives remaining a member of the Commonwealth followed discussions on the recent debate in the parliament, regarding the Maldives’ membership of the Commonwealth.

Maldives became a member of the Commonwealth in 1985.
