Commemorative notes that marks the 50th anniversary that Maldives gained independence has started selling at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) Duty Free.

An official from Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) informed Sun Online that the notes started selling Monday night, and that those who wish to have the commemorative note can purchase it for USD 500.

“We (MMA) have tasked them (INIA) with selling the commemorative notes. We have made all the arrangements. It will be available from there,” said the official.

The official said that the commemorative notes will also be available from MMA starting Wednesday.

The commemorative note, issued for the first time in history of Maldives was unveiled at the flag raising ceremony held at Republic Square to mark Independence Day by Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi – who had participated in the discussions with United Kingdom which resulted in Maldives being able to secure their independence.

MMA governor Dr Azeema Adam presented President Abdulla Yameen with the commemorative note during the ceremony.

The commemorative note design symbolizes:

• Developmental heights achieved by Maldives from 1965 to 2015.

• Maldivian independence agreement ceremony.

• Maldivian individualism, craftsmanship and Islamic heritage.

MMA said that the commemorative notes were the first polymer banknotes to be released in the history of the country. While the MRF 5,000 banknote can be used in business transactions, it will mainly be used as a symbol of 50 years of independence.
