Home Minister calls for change to police structure

Home Minister Umar Naseer has appealed to police management to give a second thought to the structure of police and give it due research.

Speaking as chief guest at the ceremony held Thursday night at Iskandhar Koshi on occasion of Police Memorial Day, Home Minister said that government wanted to station police at all inhabited islands of the country. He, however, noted that there still existed many islands with no police.

Minister Umar said that he had appealed to government to employ the easiest way to solve the problem – which is to increase number of policemen so that the service could be provided in every inhabited island. He said that the government was facing difficulties in doing so due to various reasons including the huge expense that had to be borne by the government.

“Nevertheless, government is trying to provide services of police to all islands at once. I appeal to police management to revisit the structure of the police force. And to compare the structure of police force with the structure of police force in other developed countries of the world,” said Umar.

Minister Umar in his speech gave examples of police structures employed by other countries.

Umar said that the government wanted police services to cover the entire country, adding that the aim of the government wanted to employ the most low cost, most effective way of doing so.

He said that while work was being done to provide police services to all islands, some island councils and key figures in islands were taking rent from police stations.

“I appeal to you or ask you to employ the most relaxed possible method to provide police services to those islands and make it easier for police to keep providing their services. Some islands need to be paid large amount of money as rent,” said Umar.
