Republic Square re-opened with major changes

Republic Square has been renovated and re-opened in time to celebrate 50 years of independence that Maldives will be celebrating on July 26. Republic Square was officially re-opened by 23 notable individuals from various fields – including educators, pilots, sportsmen and students.

The ceremony held to re-open Republic Square was attended by President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim as well as their youngest son.

Other notable figures that attended the ceremony were newly appointed Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan, government ministers, and top officials of state companies as well as People’s Majilis members and top judiciary officials.

Republic Square was re-opened with major changes the biggest of which is the newly built modern water fountain. Republic Square was highly decorated along with the water fountain.

“Monument of Unity “ – a symbol of friendship

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has spent MVR 5 million on the Monument of Unity built in the Republic Square. The 28 meter wide, 28 meter tall water fountain represents the unity and hospitality of Maldivian people.

The water fountain has been designed in such a way that people can climb into it and get wet or play games. And also in such a way that people can sit on it.

Multiple messages from water fountain

The water fountain has been designed to replicate public baths used during the olden age. It has been prepared to send out different messages from different angles.

• A minaret: Represents Islam

• 5 moons: Represents Islam

• 5 fingers: Represents independence

• Two hands joined together: Friendship and unity

Many had gone to watch the unveiling of the renovated Republic Square and enjoy fireworks.
