Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that there are no constitutional grounds for taking a vote of no-confidence against him, and that the motion submitted to the parliament to that effect is a personal issue.
This came in a statement issued by the Vice President today.
Noting that he was elected by the people, Dr Jameel said that his impeachment in the absence of constitutional grounds - as per the wishes of a particular group of people - means that the people are being unfairly robbed of a basic right.
“The intentions of the people who have claimed that the amendment to the Constitution is for the benefit of the country, have been revealed, and become very clear to the public,” Dr Jameel said in his statement.
He said that it has become obvious that the amendments being made to the Constitution, to change the constitutional procedures and the boundaries of the government’s powers, are targeted at a particular person.
During this holy month of Ramadan, the Maldivian people have seen the selfish and greedy actions of a particular group of people, the Vice President said.
