Five-year-old dies of dengue fever

A five-year-old girl has died of dengue fever at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé.

The deceased has been named as Hawwa Imsha, from Haa Dhaalu Nellaidhoo.

IGMH Spokesperson Zeenath Ali Habeeb told Sun Online that the child arrived at the hospital at around 2:00 p.m. today, and died while receiving treatment at 3:50 p.m.

Nellaidhoo Council Member and Imsha’s brother, Mohamed Wafir, said that she had been having fever for about 13 days before her death today, and that she was first taken to Kulhudhuffushi Hospital where she was given medication and released.

Imsha was taken to Malé on emergency today after her condition took a turn for the worse last night, Wafir told Sun Online.

This is the third death due to dengue fever over the past week. Authorities have said that the disease is spreading at an alarming rate across the country.

Efforts are ongoing by the government to put measures in place to control the outbreak.
