Dhunya accuses the Commonwealth of being biased against the Maldives

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dhunya Maumoon has accused Canada and the Commonwealth of being biased against the Maldives.

Responding to a question by Sun Media today at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry, Minister Dhunya said that they may be biased because the Maldives is a small country.

“…even if something small happens in Maldives, they release statements and raise concerns. I don’t want to mention any countries but there are countries in more serious conditions and acts against humanity and democracy happening in other countries. This is includes countries of the Commonwealth.” Minister Dhunya said.

When asked if there is tension between the Maldives and Canada after verbal exchanges recently, Minister Dhunya said that criticizing (without information) from afar is not good for the relations of the two countries. And said that if there are concerns, the government is always ready to meet.

“…and no matter which country it is, we are ready to talk and work together. But it has to be fair in this, no? We don’t believe that it is fair that because it’s a big country they hide what they do and not talk about it but talking about the things in small countries, especially picking a political side and working to get certain results.” Minister Dhunya said.

Minister has criticized Canada when they called to agenda the case of Maldives in Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group.
