Man serving life sentence for drug trafficking appeals at High Court and goes free

High Court has overruled a sentence of MVR 100,000 fine and life sentence by the Criminal Court for Cannabis trafficking.

The Criminal Court’s sentence on Mahudhee Mausoom of G.Dh. Rathafandhoo was overruled by the High Court last Tuesday.

Mahudhee Mausoom was charged after four Police officers testified to seeing him drop a film canister with drugs after he stepped off the MTCC express ferry at Hulhumalé.

The verdict from the High Court said that there were inconsistencies in the testimonies of the four officers. And questioned why the state cannot provide finger print evidence from the canister if he dropped it.

High Court said that the evidence against Mausoom are in total weak and so the Judges in the case as decided that the canister found cannot be proven without a doubt belonged to the defendant.

Mahudhee Mausoom was represented by lawyer Adam Asif in the case.
