Government decides to take over Usfasgandu

The government has made the decision to hand over Usfasgandu, where Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) holds rallies almost every night, from Male’ City Council to Housing Ministry.

The President’s Office said that this decision was made at the cabinet meeting today, where ministers discussed the issue of open spaces under the supervision of City Council being used against the terms of agreements.

The decision was made at the cabinet meeting to give Housing Ministry the authority to transfer Usfasgandu, currently under City Council, and any other space being utilised illegally, to the ministry.

The issue heated up when Dharubaaruge was transferred to Housing Ministry, with City Council refusing to handover Dharubaaruge despite being informed to do so. The case is currently at the Local Government Authority.

Also Raalhugan’du, where MDP had built camps and held protests, has been taken over by the government.
