While opposition has claimed that President Yamin does not support the campaign of Faris Maumoon, the son of the former president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President Yamin has arrived in Dhiggaru to take part in the campaign of Faris Maumoon.
President Yamin received a warm welcome from the people of Dhiggaru when he arrived at the island this morning. PPM says that the President would visit M. Maduvari and Muli as well.
Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adheeb and the Minister of Housing, Dr. Mohamed Muiz and the Leader of the government coalition’s MDA and the MP for Dh. Meedhoo constituency, Ahmed Siyam also went to the island with the President.
While President Yamin visits Dhiggaru today, the opposition has been saying that the President does not want Faris Maumoon elected as the MP for Dhiggaru constituency. They have been saying that Minister Adheeb will not be taking part in the campaign either.
President Maumoon has also visited Dhiggaru to campaign for the PPM candidate Faris for the Dhiggaru constituency. And the MPs of the PPM-MDA coalition have been visiting the islands in the constituency to muster support for the PPM candidate.
At the opening ceremony of the Faris campaign hall, former president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said that government projects and promises can be fulfilled when there are many members supporting the government and so the Dhiggaru seat is very important for PPM.
Faris won the PPM primaries for the Dhiggaru constituency with 289 votes. His oppornent, the President of the Meemu atoll council, Moosa Naseer won 142 votes.
Total four candidates are competing for the Dhiggaru seat including the MDP candidate, Adam Raazee and two independent candidates, Shameem Ali and the Deputy President of the Local Government Authority (LGA), Moosa Naseer.
Election Commission has decided to hold the Dhiggaru by-election on 6 June.
The Election Commission said that the ceremony to announce the initial results of the Dhiggaru election would be held in Dhiggaru.
