Local cashiers during the day and foreign cashiers at night at caf

After the government started checking local cafés and restaurants if they use foreign cashiers during the day, the owners have started using local cashiers during the day and foreign cashiers on the night shift.

Journalists of Sun Media check a large number of cafes and restaurants in Male’ City and some of the cafés and restaurants use local cashiers during the day. But they use foreign cashiers for the night shift.

When questioned, a foreign cashier working at a local café’ said that immigration conducts their inspections during the daytime.

“Immigration officers are checking places on at daytime. They don’t go to check at night. And so at night, foreigners are there. This place also gets checked at daytime. At that time, there is a local cashier here.” The foreigner said.

The Information Officer of Immigration, Hassan Khaleel said that they are receiving complaints and reports of such cases and they have expanded their inspections with Police involvement.

The Economic Ministry has been fining businesses that use foreign cashiers. The ministry has fined 88 businesses in the past two months.
