Foreign workers banned from three more sectors

Economic Ministry has issued a notice with three more business sectors where foreign workers are no longer allowed.

The Ministry said that foreign workers are no longer allowed in photography and all related work, souvenir production and all related work and operations at bonded warehouses at the customs area.

The Economic Ministry said that if a foreigner is to work at passenger transfer service or water sports related services, they are allowed to work with companies with 51 percent or 100 percent local shareholders.

The Deputy Minister of the Economic Ministry, Adam Thaufeeq told Sun Media today that in the fields where Maldivians can advance, only Maldivians would be allowed to work which in turn would open opportunities for local businesses.

“As a result we are hoping a lot of small business, and for middle class people, everyone would get more opportunities when it’s structured like this.” Economic Ministry said.

To offer opportunities for local businesses, the Economic Ministry has previously banned foreign workers from working at the counter as cashiers.
