HRCM investigates allegations of police assault on Eesa

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has initiated an investigation into allegations that former Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Eesa was assaulted by police officers.

HRCM Member Abdul Kareem told Sun Online that a team had visited Dhoonidhoo to investigate allegations of assault by police officers on Eesa, as well as several others.

Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed said last night that action will be taken against any police officer convicted of human rights violations.

Eesa was arrested during a protest on 1 May, following which Criminal Court has given him a remand period of 15 days.

Police said that Eesa has been, however, released, to go abroad for medical treatment as recommended by doctors.

Eesa told Raajje TV in an interview that he was intimidated and assaulted by police officers after his arrest on 1 May, resulting in a lower back spinal injury.

His decision to go abroad follows advice from his doctor at ADK Hospital to undergo a surgery, said Eesa.
