Police have banned the use of four-wheeled vehicles in protest rallies without prior permission.
A press release issued by the Police tonight says that if a four-wheeled vehicle is being used at a protest rally without Police permission, that vehicle would be impounded.
The statement said that the ban comes for the safety of protestors, security forces and public property alike.
“Starting today, four-wheel vehicles can only be used in rallies or demonstrations, with megaphones or otherwise, with a permit from the Police.” The statement said.
Police said that as per their request, Police secured a safe environment for the opposition protest by Adhaalath Party, MDP, JP and other political figures on 1 May. But the protestors changed direction towards areas secured by security forces on orders from the organizers and confrontations took place between the Police and protestors.
“And so a pick truck equipped with megaphones broke through the barricades at the closed area near the market district and drove dangerously towards the ranks of the security forces.” The statement said.
And the truck did not stop after repeated warnings and continued to drive recklessly injuring officers.
