Former President Gayoom thanks Dr Shaheem

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has thanked former Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed for his services.

Gayoom said on Twitter this morning, “Thank u @Mohamedshaheem1 for ur valuable service to the nation as minister of Islamic Affairs over many years.”

Shaheem’s resignation came yesterday, after Adhaalath Party (AP) notified its members holding government posts, to resign from their posts.

This was passed with 81 percent votes in favour by AP Council, after its President Imran Abdulla was arrested in relation to a protest led by the party on 1 May.

Although he tendered his resignation yesterday, Dr Shaheem has defended the government whenever it was criticised by Imran in the past.

There were rumours yesterday that Dr Shaheem would be appointed as the Chancellor of the Islamic University. The Islamic University Bill was ratified by the President and yesterday.

This has not been confirmed, as Dr Shaheem has not been available for a comment since his resignation.
