Russell Brand steps into UK election with Miliband interview

LONDON (AP) — Russell Brand doesn't vote, but he has stepped into Britain's election campaign by interviewing opposition leader Ed Miliband.

The comedian turned anti-capitalist campaigner released the interview Wednesday on his YouTube channel, which has more than 1 million subscribers.

Miliband disputed Brand's view that bankers hold more power than politicians and voting doesn't change anything. Miliband said "progress comes from people demanding change, politics responding, not all the way, and people pushing for that change to carry on. But without politics, without government, the change doesn't happen."

Opponents of Miliband's Labour Party criticized the interview, with Prime Minister David Cameron saying "Russell Brand's a joke."

But Miliband said he wanted to reach the 7 million Britons who aren't registered to vote.

British voters go to the polls May 7.
