Fariyash Ahmed, who escaped from Maafushi prison last year, has appealed his death sentence in High Court.
Fariyash was sentenced to death by the former Criminal Court in 2008 after he was convicted for the murder of Mohamed Shihaab with a group of people.
Sources say that Fariyash sent his appeal to the High Court last Sunday.
Aside from Fariyash, three people sentenced to death for the murder of Mohamed Shihaab are Ali Masood Saeed, Mohamed Qasim and Mohamed Shifraaz of G.A. Maamendhoo.
The death sentence to Mohamed Qasim has been over ruled by the High Court on 21 March 2013. The High Court has ordered the Criminal Court to conduct a second trial of the murder.
So far, there has been no indication that the state has presented the trial to court.
Fariyash escaped the Maafushi prison with convict Ibrahim Shahum Adam on 17 October 2014 and was found by the police four days later at a hotel.
