Basic regulations registered with Elections Commission does not allow no-confidence vote: Didi

Dr Ibrahim Didi has said today that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) basic regulations registered with Elections Commission does not allow for a no-confidence vote to be taken on the party President and Vice President.

After discussing the issue, of MDP National Congress taking votes of no-confidence on the party President and Vice President last Monday, with Elections Commission President Fuad Thaufeeg, Didi told the media that the MDP basic regulations registered with the Elections Commission was an ‘outdated’ version, and not the one passed by the MDP Congress on 29 October 2010.

“The basic regulations registered with the Elections Commission do not even allow taking votes of no-confidence on the party President and Vice President. It does not indicate that the party President and Vice President can be removed from their posts,” Didi replied to a question posed by Sun Online.

Sun’s attempts to contact Fuad on this matter have not been successful as there is no answer on his phone.

Didi said that public members of the party are deeply concerned about the removal of the party President and Vice President from their posts. As various accusations were made for removing them from the party leadership, Didi suggested that an Inquiry Commission be created by Elections Commission to find a just solution to the issue.

“As the party’s public members are concerned, and because several accusations are being made, I requested the Elections Commission to create an Inquiry Commission to conduct a fair investigation and produce an acceptable solution. Fuad said that he will hold a meeting regarding this, and promised that the Commission will do everything possible to find the best possible solution to this problem,” Didi said.

The resolution of a no-confidence vote against MDP President Dr Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy was submitted by Henveiru Dhekunu MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, and supported by former Executive Services Secretary of President’s Office Mohamed Ziyad (Ziyatte). The resolution was passed with the votes of 69 out of 70 members present at the meeting.
