President Abdulla Yameen’s Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has said that the President will not heed petitions which encourage illegal activities.
Talking to Sun Online today, Muaz also stressed that the President will not engage in any discussions on activities that violate the law.
President is responsible for ensuring that laws are upheld, and will not tolerate any activities that do not fall within the boundaries of the law, Muaz said.
Muaz’s comments come at a time when efforts are ongoing by the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), to present a petition to the President calling for the release of former President Mohamed Nasheed, who has been convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Opposition parties have requested to meet with the President to discuss the release of Nasheed and other politicians, sentenced recently on criminal offences.
