MDP stops parliament protests to allow for dialogue

The Parliamentary Group of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that the party decided not to protest during today’s parliament sitting, to allow for dialogue.

The group said in a message issued today that they were awaiting a reply, to a letter sent to the Parliament Speaker claiming that the parliament was being conducted in violation of regulations.

MDP also said that a meeting had been scheduled between Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh and MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

MPs of MDP are absent from today’s sitting, which is under way peacefully for the first time this year.

MDP members have protested using megaphones, horns and whistles at every parliament sitting so far this year, except today, calling for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s release.
