Elections Commission (EC) has said that the application will be opened for the parliamentary election for Dhiggaru constituency, upon receipt of the verdict report from Supreme Court of the trial against Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison yesterday.
Article 73 (c) of the Constitution states that an MP will be disqualified in the event that he is convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced to a term of more than twelve months, unless a period of three years has elapsed since his release.
Article 78 of the Constitution states that if a parliament seat becomes vacant, an election shall be held within sixty days from the date of the vacancy.
