Shops closed in Makunudhoo due to high electricity prices

Business owners in Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo have closed their shops to protest against high electricity prices, which they claim have doubled.

Electricity is provided in the island by Fenaka Corporation.

All 12 shops in the island have been closed for today.

Makunudhoo Council Member Mohamed Faisal told Sun Online that discussions are ongoing between shop owners and council members, but when the shops will be reopened is unknown.

The government stopped providing subsidies to businesses, following recent changes to the electricity subsidy scheme.

Several shops were closed also in Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City yesterday.

Director of Fenaka Corporation Hussain Rameez said that no changes have been made to electricity prices.

The prices used today were determined by the government of former President Mohamed Nasheed, he said, and efforts are ongoing to establish a fair subsidy system for all islands.
