No-confidence votes on Didi and Alhan on the agenda

No-confidence votes on Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Dr Ibrahim Didi and MDP Vice President Alhan Fahmy are on the agenda at today’s MDP National Council meeting. The reasons for the votes are that Didi and Alhan talk in ways which create unrest within party, and which are distressful to MDP members.

The vote will be taken at an emergency meeting of MDP National Council at 16:00 at Dharubaaruge.

The resolution will be presented by MDP Parliamentary Group Secretary General and International Spokesperson Hamid Abdul Gafoor, and supported by MDP’s Maafannu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ziyad (Ziyatte).

However Dr Didi has indicated that the National Council does not have the authority to remove a person from a position to which he was elected by votes of MDP members. He also noted that he never spoke in a manner which may hurt peace within the party; rather, he had talked about challenges in managing the party.

Issues relating to no-confidence votes on the party’s President, Vice President and Secretary General have been presented to MDP National Council on previous occasions as well, but the Council had never before entertained it.

Didi was humiliated at an MDP rally held at Usfasgandu recently, when a group of MDP supporters enforced a power cut and called Didi a traitor, when he stepped on the stage to give a speech.
