Department of Immigration and Emigration says that the secondary verification room that was introduced today has the top technology used in the best of the world.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) to introduce the verification room at the arrival terminal, the Chief Principal of Immigration, Ibrahim Ashraf said that they were facing many challenges with a lack of such a room since 1982. And the establishment of such a room today is an achievement. He said that the new verification room uses the same technology as the most advanced countries in the world.
Ashraf also said that the issue of false passports through Maldives would be resolved.
The new technology has the capability of detecting the quality of paper of the passport, machine readable zone check digit calculation, ultraviolet feature detection and the ability to read the passport chip data.
The Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed spoke at the ceremony saying that since the Maldives is highly dependent on the tourism sector, the country needs to welcome it’s guests properly and to do that, such a room is required.
And training opportunities would be opened for the immigration staff and with the expansion of the airport, the challenges facing the immigration would be resolved.
Immigration says that the room has been in service starting today, detecting false passports using the machine systematically to speed up the process.
