Maafaru has started clearing the area for their new airport

As part of the government project to develop airports in all parts of the country, N. Maafaru has started clearing the area for their new airport.

Ahmed Badheeu, who is in charge of the Maafaru Island Council, told Sun Media today that they started the work on the fifth of the month and is expecting to finish clearing the area in the next three months.

“According to the concept, the clearing would be completed in three months and the work would start with the temporary area.” Badheeu said.

The government has entrusted Millennium Capital Management to develop the airport in Maafaru under the government project to develop the transportation and tourism in the country.

Maafaru Council said that the airport would be completed by the end of the year according to Millennium Capital.

Director General of Regional Airports, Sami Ageel confirmed to Sun Media that the airport development in Maafaru has been entrusted to a company and materials are being imported for the project.

The airport development project in Maafaru has been delayed multiple times in the past. After the contract to develop the airport with Noonu Hotels was cancelled in 2008, the new project began after the island citizens protested and pressured the government claiming that the basic services are not available.
