Government: The opposition demands have no basis

The government says the demands made yesterday in the MDP-JP rallies have no basis.

In the big protest rally held yesterday demanding the immediate release of the former president Mohamed Nasheed who is charged with terrorism and the former Defense Minister Colonel-retired Mohamed Nazim who is charged with possession of a firearm, an additional 13 demands were made to the government.

About the MDP-JP protest, the spokesperson for the President’s Office Ibrahim Muaz said to Sun Media today that the main demands that were made yesterday were not something that the government can subject to and the demands were baseless.

Muaz says that yesterday’s demands include things that can be achieved through the parliament and the judiciary system. He says that the government that has separated it’s three major powers, there is nothing that the government can do. And some demands have been met by the government already.

“There’s no connection to the government. They know well that these things are not connected to the government. Things like that are among the demands.” Muaz said.

Regarding making demands, Muaz said the government had pledged to meet the demands in five years.

Yesterday’s rally included demands for freedom to exercise basic civil rights and allow the rights to be executed without restriction. Aside from the freedom of Mohamed Nazim and President Nasheed, the protesters demanded to free the MP for the Henveiru-middle constituents Ali Azim.
