The father of the Dharumavantha School student Mohamed Arham (Nooreege, Haa Alif Hoarafushi) who was found murdered in Lorenzo Park in 2012, says he wants to pursue the death penalty if the defendants are found guilty of murder.

At the hearing today at the criminal court, the judge clarified the sentence for murder in the Islamic law to those present, before the victim’s father Abdul Gafoor Ali testified.

The judge said that according to the Islamic Shariah, the convict may be given the death penalty, asked to pay a financial compensation to the heirs of the victim, or forgiven by the heirs.

The victim’s father said that he wants the death penalty for all four defendants, if they are found guilty.

Mohamed Sufyaan, Athif Rasheed, Mohamed Visam and Mansoor Yoosuf have been charged with murder, following the death of the 16-year-old boy on the night of 29th May 2012.

Out of the witnesses produced by the prosecution, only the officer who prepared the video analysis has not testified in court. The prosecutor says the he has not appeared in court because he is currently studying in New Zealand.

The judge said that the said report is not a crucial piece of evidence according to the prosecution, and asked to check if there was a Maldivian Embassy in New Zealand to get his testimony via video conference.

The trial was adjourned after scheduling another hearing for 1st March 2015.
