Issue of two new ministries passed at Parliament

Creation of Ministry of Environment and Energy and Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights was passed by the Parliament today.

The issue was passed unanimously with 43 votes. One member abstained.

With this change in government structure as proposed by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, issues related to the environment, meteorology, drinking water, and sewerage will be handled by Ministry of Environment. They are currently under Housing and Environment.

Issues related to families, children, people with special needs, and facilitation of government policies on human rights will be handled by Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights. They are currently under Ministry of Health and Family.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said that ministers will be appointed to the Ministries after discussion with political parties. Even though ministers are not appointed, work at the new ministries should begin next week.
