The newly sworn in Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen (Deen) has assured that he will uphold the country’s Constitution and stand firm in carrying out his responsibilities as Vice President.
Waheeddeen was sworn in today subsequent to Parliament granting approval of President Waheed’s appointment of Waheeddeen as Vice President.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office by President Waheed and Vice President Waheeddeen after the swearing-in ceremony, Waheeddeen said that he will not hesitate in doing anything within the limits of the law, and assured that he will treat all citizens equally.
“God willing, there will be nothing within the limits of the law that we will hesitate to do. We will follow the law and dare to accomplish things. I will stand firm to support the President,” Waheeddeen said.
Noting that the current situation in the Maldives is one of the saddest in its history, Waheeddeen said that he will fulfil his responsibilities to the best of his ability during this critical time.
“I sincerely thank members of Parliament for their support. I assure you that I will make you proud for the confidence you have put in me,” Waheeddeen said.
President Waheed said at the press conference that Waheeddeen has served the country in various areas:
“He has held the posts of Atolls Minister, and Youth and Sports Minister in the previous government. He has also been a member of Human Rights Commission and a member of State Advisory Boards.”
The President noted Waheeddeen’s contribution to social services, and stated that no other person is more suitable for the job of the country’s Vice President than Waheeddeen.
The President thanked Members of the Parliament for the strong support and endorsement given to the government today by approving the Vice President and the Cabinet.
The Parliament passed approval for Waheeddeen as Vice President unanimously, with 45 votes.
