Committee halts investigation of Ibthihaal

The Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government has paused investigation of the death of three-year-old Mohamed Ibthihaal, due to suspected abuse, in Marine Corner of Vaavu Rakeedhoo on 28 of last month.

Chair of the committee, Villiufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed on Sunday said to Sun Online that the committee has paused investigating the matter because Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has leaked some confidential documents related to the case and as nothing can be done at the moment as Parliament is at a recess.

Riyaz said that the purpose of having committee meetings is to find out if any institution was negligent in the case, and to order institutions to take actions with the responsible people if found negligent. He noted that the case is under investigations by institutions.

“Rozaina of MDP has revealed confidential information submitted to the committee. Nothing can be achieved by having the committee now” said Riyaz.

Police and Gender Ministry has shared reports with the Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government as requested by the committee.

However, Riyaz said that committee has now faced obstacles to summon institutions to the Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government because the information shared with the committee has been leaked.

Rozaina on Saturday has said that further clarification regarding Ibthihaal’s case is needed and if committee meetings are not held by the end of this week MPs by themselves will go to the institutions.

In a press conference held previously by MDP, Rozaina has said that Police and Gender Ministry had been negligent in Ibthihaal’s case.
