Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has welcomed the ratification of the bill on Prevention of Domestic Violence by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik yesterday.
PPM Council Member and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dhunya Maumoon said at a press conference held at PPM office today that this is an indication of the priority given to the issue by the current government.
She also noted that this legislation would be of great support for those working against domestic violence.
Dhunya also thanked all parties involved in submitting and passing the bill in the Parliament, and noted that all leading political parties cooperated in passing this bill.
When asked why a legislation on prevention of domestic violence has not been enforced in Maldives until now, Dhunya said that one reason is that the Maldivian society does not accept that such problems exist.
She acknowledged that it is rather late for such an Act to be implemented in the Maldives, and said that Maldivian society became one where such topics can be discussed, rather late.
“Such problems were not too common, and even when they did exist, people hid them at home. To talk about them was taboo, it was only recently that we became a society where such things can be talked about,” Dhunya said.
