Gayoom: MDP, JP

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that the efforts by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) And Jumhooree Party (JP) to defend the constitution are ‘useless’.

Gayoom made this remark while talking to reporters prior to his departure to New Delhi, India, to participate in the 15th Sustainable Development Summit to be held from 5 to 7 February 2015.

He said that the present government, particularly President Abdulla Yameen, respects and follows the constitution and has not violated the constitution in any way.

Gayoom’s comments follow claims by JP that the ruling party since coming to power has amended laws, and dismissed people from their posts in violation of the spirit of the constitution.

JP has joined forces with MDP to put an end to the government’s efforts that contradict the constitution. The two parties have agreed that it is their responsibility as political parties to put an end to these activities.
