Mother arrested on suspicion of allowing sexual abuse of daughter

Police are investigating claims of a 14-year-old girl being abused by her mother’s boyfriend.

The police spokesperson told Sun Online that a man was arrested in Lhaviyani Hinnavaru last night on suspicion of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl, and that a woman has also been arrested for allowing the abuse.

Sources have told Sun Online that the woman is the girl’s mother and the abuse was taking place with her consent. The woman is originally from an island in Noonu atoll, but lives in Hinnavaru following a marriage to a man from Hinnavaru. She is presently divorced.

She has three children from her marriage to the man from Hinnavaru, out of which only the 14-year-old was in her custody. The other two children live with their father, and following this incident, the 14-year-old has also now gone to live with her father.

According to the Child Sex Abuse (Special Provisions) Act, the penalty for this crime is imprisonment for a period between 20 and 25 years.
