Revetment project begins for Eydhafushi reclaimed area

A project is under way to set up revetment at the reclaimed area, which is affected by erosion, in Baa Eydhafushi.

Vice President of Eydhafushi Council Mohamed Naurif told Sun Online that the work began yesterday.

“About 800 metres of revetment will be set up under this project, which should be completed within 62 days,” said Naurif.

This project follows complaints about severe erosion at the newly-reclaimed area, by the people of Eydhafushi.

President of Eydhafushi Council Ali Waheed said earlier that 8,600 tons of rocks were taken to the island to be used as revetment at the reclaimed area. He said that the rocks were placed near the eroding area, and have now ended up in the sea.

Further discussions are ongoing with relevant government institutions regarding the reclaimed area, said Waheed.

Land reclamation began in Eydhafushi in April 2014, by Dutch company Boskalis.
