President Abdulla Yameen has nominated Ibrahim Fazul and sent his name to the Privatisation Board, to be appointed as the Managing Director of Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
Fazul presently holds a senior administrative post at the Parliament Secretariat.
Chairperson of Privatisation Board Mohamed Nizar has confirmed to Sun Online that an individual has been nominated for this post, but did not disclose the name of the person. Similarly, Spokesperson for the President’s Office Ibrahim Muaz Ali also refused to provide details, but said that President Yameen has sent the name of an individual to the Privatisation Board, to be appointed as the new Managing Director of MWSC.
Fazul has also worked as a senior official of People’s Alliance (PA), a political party co-founded by President Yameen several years ago.
This nomination comes after Ahmed Umar was dismissed from his post of Managing Director of MWSC last Sunday. Umar was appointed to this post, a slot given to Jumhooree Party (JP), by the current government. He was dismissed after the government initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire at MWSC in December 2014, which resulted in water being cut off in Malé for a week.
