Jabir sworn in, submits resolution to parliament

Deputy Leader of Jumhooree Party Abdullah Jabir, who won the Kaashidhoo by-election, has been sworn in as Member of Parliament.

The ceremony was held at 17:00 today at Parliament office, and was attended by Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim.

Following this, Jabir proceeded to present a resolution to Parliament Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed. The resolution, copies of which was handed out to media as well, concerns the illegal acts of former President Mohamed Nasheed, and requests that investigations be conducted into these issues, according to article 99 of the Constitution.

The resolution notes that Nasheed threatened and influenced judicial institutions, locked up the Supreme Court, issued illegal orders which were in conflict with court rulings, and issued orders to carry out illegal activities against Judges.

The resolution also mentions that former President Nasheed, who was also the Commander in Chief, illegally ordered the arrest of several Members of Parliament, made illegal use of the government budget, disregarded equality of citizens and prioritised the needs of people of a certain political view and encouraged hostility and anger in the society.

“... to investigate the aforementioned issues, to set up an interim committee based on the result of the investigation, disclose the view of the Parliament on the issues in the report, and to inform the relevant institutions to take the necessary legal steps,” reads the resolution.

Jabir stated that the resolution was submitted to fulfil a promise he made to the people of Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru - that the first thing he would submit after being sworn in as a Member of Parliament would be a resolution concerning the illegal activities of former President Nasheed.
